When Jayke James Percival, 10, sat down to design a logo for the West Shore Aboriginal Day Festival, he said he wanted to make sure it was original and didn’t want his design to look like anything else he’d seen.
He entered the logo contest and was deemed the winner by the festival committee. This year marks the third annual Aboriginal Day festival and the first year the festival has its official logo.
“From now on your logo will represent our festival for many years in the future,” said Kendra Gage, Executive Director of Hulitan Family and Community Services Society.
On top of having his logo selected to represent the festival, Jake won a pizza party for his Grade 5 class at Happy Valley Elementary school and swim passes for his entire class at West Shore Parks and Recreation.
This year 1,000 cloth bags have been printed with Jayke’s design and will be given out at the festival on National Aboriginal Day, June 21 from 10-2 at West Shore Parks and Recreation.
The West Shore Aboriginal Day Festival is hosted by eight Aboriginal-serving organizations: Hulitan Family and Community Services Society, M’akola Housing Society, Sooke Family Resources Society, Island Metis Community Services, Indigenous Perspectives Society, Nil Tu,O Child and Family Services, Surrounded By Cedar Child and Family Services and SD62 Aboriginal Education.
Sponsors for the festival include FortisBC, West Shore Parks and Recreation, Canadian Heritage, First Nations Health Authority, CRD First Nations Relations, Aboriginal Neighbours, Anglican Diocese of BC, Vancity and RBC.
