Protect Affordable Indigenous Housing in British Columbia
What Is Happening?
Urban Native Housing Operating Agreements Expire in March 2028
- M’akola Housing Society (MHS) has 528 rental homes in British Columbia that will lose their government subsidies when operating agreements expire by March 31, 2028.
- More than three-quarters (76%) of the people living in these rentals are paying “shelter rate” rents, the most affordable price available in British Columbia.
- More than three-quarters (76%) of the people living in these rentals are paying “shelter rate” rents, the most affordable price available in British Columbia. These support the most vulnerable Indigenous families and Elders in our community
- There is a major shortage of subsidized rental homes across BC. People who depend on deeply affordable rent will struggle to find alternative affordable housing.

What You Can Do!
Contact your elected Community MPs, MLAs, and Housing Ministers.
Contacting your elected official via email, letter mail, or social media is a very effective way of making an issue matter to someone who can influence government decision making.
We have created these toolkits to help you advocate for your affordable housing needs ahead of the impending loss of government subsidies in 2028.
Contacting elected officials directly is a great way to bring attention to this issue.
Here are some tips on how to contact them, along with an email template you can use.
Social Media
A great way to increase support for our cause is to share real human impact stories on social media.
Sharing how losing affordable housing will impact your life will show others, especially elected officials, how important it is to renew funding.
Join Our Campaign
We at MHS will be working to bring awareness to this issue, and believe that a community based campaign to highlight how the expiry will impact not only current tenants, but the greater BC community.
